HOW TO WRITE A SHORT STORY

Accomplished writer, editor and qualified trainer Melita Granger is offering the online course HOW TO WRITE A SHORT STORY

Course length
: 6 weeks
At the beginning of each week information and tasks are emailed to students. The tasks are submitted to Melita, who comments and gives feedback. Melita will be available to discuss the information, tasks and course content via telephone and email.

Course objectives:
1.) To read quality short stories by master writers.

2.) To understand the function of planning, plot, point of view, theme,

character, dialogue, time and setting in a short story.

3.) Writing and reviewing your own short stories.

Week 1. Overview of the short story. Raymond Carver's Intimacy or The

Cathedral and D.H. Lawrence's The Rocking Horse Winner. Conflict. Roald

Dahl's The Great Switcheroo.

Week 2. Character . Ring Lardner's I can't Breathe. Dialogue. J.D.

Salinger's Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes.

Week 3. Point of View . Alan Sillitoe's The Loneliness of the

Long-Distance Runner.

Week 4. Setting. Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. Theme. Charlotte

Gilman Perkins' The Yellow Wallpaper.

Week 5. Plot. Philip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Climax. Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. Twist. Guy de Maupassant's The

Necklace.

Week 6. Editing and making every word count. Ernest Hemingway's Hills

Like White Elephants.
